When mentioned Bali, it is often associated with volcanic mountains, iconic rice paddies, beaches and seaside temples. This place is probably the most famous island in Indonesia. As I’m travelling with elderly, this trip is planned in the way to visit the iconic symbols of Bali (mainly temples). Perhaps I will plan a next trip that focuses on water activities, beaches and café soon…

Overview

After much research, we realized that to travel in bali, it is essential for you to hire a local drivers due to the lack of public transport and the complication of the road. In bali, you will realized that there is lack of highway, thus travelling time from one place to another tend to be long. Hence, this was probably the best way to explore a lot of key sights of the island without being too rushed or stressed.

Day One (Read here): Having to reach bali late at night, we plan to travel from the airport to lovina beach where the next day activities are situated.
Denpasar Airport ® Hotel (Lovina)

Day Two (Read here): Lovina beach is where you are given the opportunity to catch sights of dolphins and corals. We will also be travelling to Pura Ulun Danu Beratan Temple before engaging in the fun of riding the ATV. Lastly, we will visit Pura Tanah Lot in the evening as it is the only time the temple is being accessible.

Day Three (Read here): we start our day enjoying the view of the rice paddies while having decent food at café pomegranate before visiting another cliffside temple (Uluwatu Temple).  Explore the gigantic Hindu sculptures at GWK to enhance knowledge of Hindu religion. Lastly, we immerse ourselves in the breathtaking sunset view while enjoying our dinner at the Jimbaran Bay.

Day Four : Start the day early by waking up at 2am to hike mount batur before visiting the coffee plantation for a taste of coffee luwak.  We do some last minute souvenir shopping before visiting the famous café Angelita Patisserie. This also signified the end of our Bali Trip.

Day FOUR

We woke up at about 2.30 am for preparation to leave the hotel at 3am to hike mount batur, an active volanco, before returning back. After about 1.5 hrs of drive, we finally reached the base of mount batur at 4.30am. We realized that we are too late and need to rush so the peak to watch sunrise at 6.20am. An advice is to reach the base at 3am so that you can have the leisure of hiking at a more comfortable pace.

Halfway to the peak
As mentioned early, we started our hike too late so it was quite rush for us to reach the peak. Our guide suggested that we should hike to halfway where she knew a spot where we can have unblock view of the sunrise. We are thankful for this suggestion as it came in handy since I was not feeling well that day.

The view was really stunning. It would have been even better if we are at the peak.
We will be back to conquer it in the next trip.

In one hour drive from mount batur, we reached Satria Agrowisata. It is a local coffee farm and plantation where various types of coffee beans are harvested and produced, including the world famous Luwak coffee.

The whole place is well-maintained as you can see the surrounded by greenery on both sides. Along the way, you can see the coffee plants, the cages where the luwat lives and where the beans are collected.

You will then finish the tour at the hut which displays the different type of ingredients used in their coffee where you sit down and taste 12 different types of coffee and drinks! The sampling is free except for luwat coffee which cost USD 11 for a cup.

The mart sells their products such as coffee, oil, spices and fragrances.  We bought one packet of mangosteen tea (IDR 60,000), one packet of ginseng coffee (IDR 90,000) as well as one packet of luwat coffee in a carved bottle (IDR 280,000). Me being a typical Singaporean, I randomly comment that “why no discount”. Never did I imagined that my remarks earn me a free box of mangosteen tea.

The drivers told us that we can get cheaper luwat coffee in other places, but that does not guarantee that the said luwat coffee is genuine that why he brought us here instead.  It’s time for me to share my favourite hotel in this whole trip- Jungle Retreat / Kupu Kupu Barong.

As mentioned in the previous post, due to the recent bali bomb, they have strengthen their security by doing compulsory check on all vehicle entering their estate. In kupu kupu barong, you will be able to experience and live in building surrounded by greenery and animals as though you are living in the jungle.

Upon reaching, you will reach this car pouch area where you unload the luggage.
They will have this electrical shuttle to send you to the building where you will be staying at.

Really love this hotel a lot as it has the feeling of living in the nature. The hotel has strong Balinese style with spacious room space. The bath tub was really big and comfortable to relax in.

We went for lunch at Malioboro enjoying ayam tulang lunak. Ayam tulang lunak allows one to eat every single bits of the chicken including the bones.

Menu

The seating area. Moments after I took this photo, the place was flooded with Chinese tourists.
Ayam Presto Telur Asin (Salted Egg Yolk Sauce): This was the ½ chicken serving. It was really crispy. However, the salted egg yolk chicken tends to be very dry after a few bites as the sauces was fried till dried. The bones doesn’t have much taste just that it was very brittle as we try breaking it with light pressure from the fork.

Ayam Presto Madu Wijien (Honey Sauce) (IDR 86,000): This was the ½ chicken serving. The chicken was also very crispy. It also carries a natural fragrant from the roasted sesame. I find this dish pretty decent to eat but lacks the “wow” factor to stand out.

Tahu Telor: The tahu(beancurd) was coated with a thick layer of egg which is crisply fried. Accompanied with sweet soya sauce, peanuts and strips of cucumbers, it was really sweet and crunchy.

We went for some shopping before visiting out the last place – Angelita Tea Salon and Patisserie café. It was famous a popular café in bali where visitors go there for hi-tea, breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The entire place was in soft tiffany blue and white wall panels. It was really a place you should visit once if you are in seminyak, bali. The place was really pretty. Desserts were served in candy-coloured chinaware. You can satisfy you sweet tooth here as it serve pretty decent cakes and light meals.

The cakes really look very pretty and tempting.

Menu

We settled for avocado prawn salad (IDR 55,000), special breakfast (IDR 75,000), Honey chicken Wings (IDR35, 000), Taro Latte ( IDR 28,000) and Iced Tea (IDR 20,000).

Avocado prawn salad (IDR 55,000): The avocado was soft. Pair with sherry dressing, it was slightly sour, thus increasing our appetite. The prawns provided were also very fresh.

Special breakfast (IDR 75,000):It was like the typical American breakfast we can enjoy in café. I find it prefer normal. Only thing I dislike about is the bread as the bread was rather soft and soggy.

Honey chicken Wings (IDR35, 000): It was crispy. The honey coating the chicken was minimal. I find it dry if I do not pair it with the sweet chilli sauce provided. With the sauce, it was a perfect match.

Taro Latte (IDR 28,000): I love the taro latte a lot as the latte was accompanied with tinge of taro fragrant. Best of all,  it was not too sweet.

Iced Tea (IDR 20,000): It was very refreshing after a oily meal as tea tends to neutral the greasy feeling in our mouth.

Upon reaching bali airport, we were fascinated by the decoration and how grand the place was. This is because the arrival gate was located at the basement, and the only view there was the carpark, so we have the misconception that bali airport was kind of ugly.

As it was during easter period, the airport was also decorated with bunny and eggs. In the airport, most of the items were displayed in USD, but fear not, as you can still pay with Indonesian rupiah. There are ample of cafes around where you can chill while waiting for your boarding time.

For more information of how our KLM flight experience is, do read more here. It was really a pleasant and enjoying flight as we love the food and flight entertainment. The seats were also very spacious. Their safety introduction was also carried out on the screens, which I find it very unique and fun. Really hope to be able to visit bali again on the KLM flight. The flight experience was really wonderful. Tickets can be purchased at www.klm.com.
