Putu piring is a type of round, steamed rice cake with
a centre of melted palm sugar. A Malay adaptation of an Indian dish, it is a
popular local snack. These babies made our journey to the east worth it. It is
common to find Chinese version of this snack Tutu Kueh but to find Putu Piring,
it required some effort. Love how fresh the coconut is and when you receive it
hot, the sugar is still melted inside. Awesome and cheap local snack!!
There's a reason why the stall is plastered with award
certificates and press recommendations. The only item on the menu is the soft
putu piring with warm melted Gula Melaka within!
It cost only $2 for 5 of these delights. It was served
with cool coconut shreds to go with it. The coconut shed together with the putu
piring, it creates a sweet-savoury taste, making you hunger for more.
It is easy to locate the stall as you will always find queue
infront of it. But fear not, the queue was being served very fast.
You will notice that the helpers are all dress in
white. You can see them skillfully making the putu piring by adding rice flour
to the mould and melted gula melaka. The sight makes you feel even hungrier.
This is my pack of heaven. It so soft, fluffy and
sweet!! Love the combination. Sweet-Savoury Delight.
The generous amount of
gula melaka within.
