KFC used to be associated with “Kentucky Fried
Chicken”. However, it has recently excited chicken lovers by the new concept of
Korean Fried Chicken. By methods of removing the fat and frying twice to have a
chicken piece with crispy and non-greasy outer layer, Korean fried chicken is
made different from American-style fried chicken.
Enjoying this delicious chicken dish has become
fashionable to Singapore diners. It has now started to make wave into Johor, Malaysia
too.
After the opening of the first Korean fried chicken store
(22 Korean Fried Chicken - First Korean Fried Chicken in Mount Austin), Wawa
chicken was also launched in a more convenient location – City Square.
Wawa chicken is a very small and compact store located
in level 3 (inner city) of city square mall, Johor. It has a very simple bright yellow decoration.
It provides few tables for dinners to enjoy quick meal.
The price is considered cheap when compared to that of
Singapore. But the wait was long when I visited during Sunday evening.
There are 4 sets to choose from ranging from RM15.90 to
RM39.90 depending on the number of pieces chosen. We can choose different
combination of chicken – Chicken Drumstick (SET A), Chicken Wings (SET B), Mini
Drumsticks (SET C) and Dumstick + wing + Drumette (SET D). There are also 3
type of sauce available for selection – Soy Sauce, Spicy Soy Sace & Cheese.
As for beverage, the choice was limited as well. There is only coke, sprite and
Ice lemon tea.
In the end, we have chosen mini drumstick (Set B) –
Cheese flavour and Soy Sauce.
Mini drumstick (Set B) – Soy Sauce (RM15.90): The
chicken was crispy and was not too oily. It was consider decent for a Korean fried
chicken. This is light soy sauce taste in every bite. But I would suggest that
they can be more generous with their sauce as it tend to be bland in some part
of the chicken due to limited sauce apply. Furthermore, the chicken meat was
slightly dry and overcooked. Perhaps, we received such standard due to their
peak demand. Since we only received our food after 30mins wait.
Mini drumstick (Set B) – Soy Sauce (RM15.90)
Mini drumstick (Set B) – Cheese (RM15.90): The chicken was crispy and was not too oily (same
as that of the soy sauce since it’s the same chicken). This flavour really fair
badly as compared to the soy sauce flavour. It was really dry. The cheese power
on the chicken give the cheese taste but does not go well with the chicken. It
would be better if melted cheese was used instead.
Mini drumstick (Set B) – Cheese flavour (RM15.90)
In comparison with the taste, I certainly feel that 22Korean Fried Chicken taste better. But for the convenient and the price, one
can visit wawa chicken for a taste to satisfy one’s craving.
